How to Read a Book

A Lecture by Daniel Yovino

Now in its ninth year, the enormously successful CREAM, from the top exhibition will be presented in January 2011, for the first time at the Performance Art Institute. CREAM, from the top draws from the thriving communities of nine Bay Area MFA programs, gathering those candidates who have risen to the top of their respective classes. Creator and curator, Kathryn Weller Renfrow, consistently selects the strongest and most compelling emerging artists, allowing the Bay Area to discover them for the first time. This year's exhibition features the largest number of artists to date, and will expand throughout the spacious galleries at 550 and 575 Sutter Street beginning on January 22, 2011 .

For Immediate Release:

The Diego Rivera Gallery of the San Francisco Art Institute proudly presents two concurrent shows, Here—Robert Moya and There—Ferdinanda Florence; both investigate the notions of the completeness/incompleteness and history of space. Both shows will also employ the juxtaposition of large-scale paintings with intimately-scaled works.

Ferdinanda Florence is a Vallejo, CA artist who paints structures such as walls, fences and windows that serve as metaphors for human experience: how we operate within our own mental spaces, and how we interact with others. She is a professor at Solano College and is finishing her MFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI).

Robert Moya, who resides in Los Angeles, is also completing his MFA at SFAI. Robert makes non-objective paintings comprised of three-dimensional surfaces that are a visible history of the process employed in the making of them.

This exhibition will give the two artists a unique opportunity to have an individual show, while sharing a gallery space; through this pairing, work which seems so different on the surface will ultimately reveal a deeper investigation of similar concerns.

The Fuller Projects gallery at Indiana University proudly presents a two-person show, "Fact/Simile," by Los Angeles-based artists, Alison Byrnes and Robert Moya.

As painters, both Alison Byrnes and Robert Moya inevitably deal with the element of representation. Alison makes funny paintings about history by translating historical text into visual articulations. Specifically, she is interested in portraying the problem of historiography itself. Robert builds up layers of paint, which he then cuts into and collages. His final product employs the use of paint as paint itself, in non-representational compositions.

In Fact/Simile, Alison and Robert challenge the idea of a painting as being a final note, whether representational, or non-objective. In coming together for the show, both artists decided to start a small body of work by creating a seed painting, and agreed to base all additional works on that painting, so that Alison's works become representations of a representation, and Robert's become representations of a non-representation. In Fact/Simile, two artists with seemingly disparate ways of using paint create a dialogue that creatively deals with an issue upon which all painters take a stance: representation.

An opening reception will be held from 8:00-10:00pm at The Fuller Projects

Alive and Kicking!
Subversiveness can take many forms. What could be more
political than pushing against the status quo and insisting on
maintaining a practice that can often be all but dismissed as
irrelevant? At a time when spectacle and objectlessness has
been de rigueur, many artists have held a different sort of
vision. Things such as materials, process, color, and form
used in a non-representational or near-nonrepresentational
hybrid aesthetic can have a powerful effect, one that can get
under our skin in unexpected ways. In 2009, abstraction is
Alive and Kicking! This exhibition celebrates its many
possibilities.

643 Project Space is pleased to exhibit, Fluorescences, opening Monday, September 29, with an artist reception on Friday, October 3, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Fluorescences features the work of Alison Foshee, Robert Moya, Aska Iida and Christine Morla. By using a blend of craft, store bought, and traditional materials, the artists force innovation and a deep investigation into varying relations in space, color, surface, and composition. While manipulating man-made materials, the artists explore the boundaries of the two-dimensional and three dimensional, creating illusions of space and mimicking forms from the natural world.

A reception will be held on Friday, October 3, 2008 from 6:00-9:00 pm. The show is free and open to the public. The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery is proud to present Immediate Future, featuring works by the recipients of the 2008 Murphy & Cadogan Fellowships in the Fine Arts. This exhibition provides a first-glance at what is being produced by promising artists within regional graduate programs. For many featured artists this exhibition marks their first major exposure, and for all participants it represents an opportunity to share what they have been developing in their graduate studios with a broader audience.

The Murphy & Cadogan Fellowships in the Fine Arts are annual awards sponsored by The San Francisco Foundation to assist art students in funding their final year of graduate studies. In partnership with the Foundation, the Arts Commission Gallery is committed to showcasing works by outstanding Bay Area art students through the annual fellowship exhibition. The jurors for this year’s awards were Lisa Dent, Charles Mobley, Denise Ruiz and Meg Shiffler.

Bay Area colleges and universities represented by the twenty-four 2008 recipients are the Academy of Art University, California College of the Arts, Mills College, The San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University and Stanford University. Media represented in the show includes drawing, film & video, installation, mixed media, painting, printmaking, performance and sculpture.

The McNish Art Gallery at Oxnard College is pleased to announce the Latino Visions Exhibit. The artists selected for this show represent the geographic and stylistic diversity of Latin American Artists from Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. The gallery will host a reception on September 15, 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The exhibit will concur with the celebration of the Latino Heritage Month and will run from September 15 – October 15, 2008.
Latino Visions combines the vibrancy of historical Latino art with traditional imagery redefined by innovative aesthetic approaches. It is characterized by the diversity that exists within the rich Hispanic/Latino culture, thus featuring artists from Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Perú, including Chuy c/s, Xavier Montes, Rude Calderon, Paul Benavidez, Robert Moya, Victoria Abram, Gladys Rodriguez, Olguin Tapia, Wayne Alaniz Healy, Claudia Pardo-McFadyen, Mark Vergara, Angelica Garcia, and Pamela Lamas. Their art ranges from traditional portraiture to contemporary urban art, encompassing the eclectic nature of this exhibit and surveying several artistic media--painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media. The purpose of this exhibit is not to generalize those who shape the Latino cultural tradition, but to show how its preservation lies precisely on the medley of ideas and images that showcase the unique complex nature of its participants, and to celebrate it.
